Even though I am no longer doing publicity at Press 53, I'd like to tell you about author Denzil Strickland's quest to increase his Amazon ranking before Christmas. The book is doing well, but it should be in more hands. If you haven't yet found the right gift, please consider giving great literature this year, and take a look specifically at Swimmers in the Sea by Denzil Strickland.

Two writers whose work placed in the Salem College National Literary Awards have recently inked deals with NC publisher Algonquin Books and NY-based Simon & Schuster.

Heidi Durrow's book Light-skinned-ed Girl will be published by the former in 2009. Zoe Carter's book Imperfect Endings has been acquired by S&S.

Durrow placed twice, in 2004 and 2006, as a finalist in the Salem College Reynolds Price Short Fiction Award. More recently, she won Barbara Kingsolover's 2008 Bellweather Prize for Literature of Social Change.

Carter's work earned an honorable mention in the Salem College Penelope Niven Creative Nonfiction category earlier this year.

Congratulations to both writers! One more reason to enter.
